Lane Kiffin, head coach of LSU, spoke about his team’s upcoming game against Ole Miss, emphasizing the players’ performance rather than the coaches’ roles. The match will feature a face-off between the No. 7 Tigers and No. 8 Rebels, led by Kiffin’s former defensive coordinator, Pete Golding. Despite Kiffin’s return to play his former team, he highlighted the importance of player readiness.
During a press session, Kiffin stated, “I know, obviously, a lot’s gonna be made about me, but this is about the players being prepared very well and playing very well.” He dismissed the focus on coaching gallery engagements, noting, “Pete’s not gonna tackle anybody; I’m not gonna throw any touchdowns.” This underscores his belief in team preparation over individual spotlight.
Kiffin spoke about the significance of the first SEC game, with both teams starting the season 2-0. He urged his players to concentrate on meticulous preparation, ignoring external chatter about the match. “It’ll be about how well did we practice, how well did we prepare, so how well did we play on game day going into a place that’s had a lot of success there,” he remarked.
The coach acknowledged Ole Miss’s talent, mentioning their second-longest win streak in the country and standout players like quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy, who has scored three touchdowns in two games. LSU boasts quarterback Sam Leavitt, with 574 yards and two touchdowns. Both teams have impressive wins against ACC opponents, with Ole Miss defeating foes 41-38, and LSU trumping Clemson 51-10.
Last season, Kiffin transitioned from Ole Miss to LSU, while Golding took charge of the Rebels during their CFP games. This year, LSU faced scrutiny over attempts to recruit players with NFL contracts, backing away under conference pressure. As the game approaches, LSU is favored over Ole Miss, although Golding aims to deliver a significant victory to assert leadership.
LSU and Ole Miss will face off on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET, broadcasted on ABC.
