The Los Angeles City Council’s Arts, Parks and Libraries Committee voted on Tuesday to increase ticket prices for the Los Angeles Zoo by $2. This decision aims to raise general admission for adults to $29. The proposed hike must still receive approval from the Budget Committee and the full City Council.

This marks the second consecutive year of rising prices at the zoo. In fiscal 2026-27, the city expects the increase to help balance its budget, as officials implemented a $5 raise per ticket last year to address a financial shortfall. The last price adjustment occurred in 2012, when tickets rose by $2.

The zoo spans 133 acres in Griffith Park and serves as home to 1,600 animals. Despite its attractions, the zoo has encountered significant challenges. Legal issues have burdened the institution for years, stemming from a 2024 lawsuit between the city, which owns and operates the zoo, and the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA). The city accused GLAZA of withholding $50 million from an endowment fund and violating agreements. A preliminary injunction currently prevents GLAZA from managing the fund.

Last month, a judge dismissed GLAZA’s bankruptcy filing after the city attorney argued it was a tactic to delay the lawsuit. The nonprofit first partnered with the city in 1963, handling fundraising and events until their agreement ended last year.

Operational difficulties at the zoo include funding and staffing shortages, leading to closed exhibits and the transfer of elephants Billy and Tina to another facility due to inadequate conditions. Recent federal inspections noted rust and paint issues in exhibits and underscored critical resource shortfalls. The loss of GLAZA’s support further complicates the zoo’s national accreditation status. A grand jury report suggested finding a new private-public partnership to stabilize the institution.

Despite these challenges, the L.A. Zoo remains a more affordable option compared to other Southern California attractions. For instance, the San Diego Zoo, hosting 12,000 animals on 100 acres, charges $78 for adult admission.
