The Los Angeles Rams were predicted to be strong contenders for the Super Bowl this season, yet their performance in the opening game showed otherwise. Facing the San Francisco 49ers in an NFL International Series match held in Melbourne, Australia, the Rams faced a notable defeat, losing 27-7.
The Rams introduced several new players to enhance their defense, including reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. Garrett’s debut was overshadowed by an ongoing injury that limited his impact during the game. His presence on the field was inconsistent, contributing little to the Rams’ efforts. Additionally, new cornerback Trent McDuffie managed to make four tackles and defend two passes in his first game. Safety Quentin Lake delivered a commendable performance with 10 total tackles, seven of which were solo, and an interception.
Following his unimpressive first game, Garrett acknowledged his shortcomings, stating, “This was the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there, and I’ve got to be better.” Garrett participated in approximately 40 plays and failed to make any noteworthy recordable actions in the game’s final box score. The Rams, considered favorites by numerous sportsbooks with three points or more, experienced an unexpected setback.
This game marked the first instance since 2018 where Garrett did not exert any quarterback pressure. Despite one interception, San Francisco’s Brock Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes, accumulating 205 yards and achieving three touchdowns during the game.
Garrett admitted being less than fully healthy due to knee swelling, which caused him to miss training camp and adversely affected his performance in Australia. He stated, “When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what they were doing, and that showed. I wasn’t who I needed to be for my team.”
The Rams faced additional challenges, missing their prominent defensive player Aaron Donald, who did not travel with the team. Donald, retired from professional football since March 2024, is undergoing preparations for his return.
As the Rams look to improve after their disappointing kickoff to the season, they will host the New York Giants on Monday, Sept. 21. Their performance will be closely monitored, as fans anticipate a stronger showing.
