Star quarterback Baker Mayfield expressed his admiration for a fellow teammate’s skills during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offseason practices. Mayfield revealed his feelings of being “completely overwhelmed” by running back Kenneth Gainwell’s abilities.
The Bucs enhanced their backfield by signing Gainwell to a one-year, $14 million contract. Mayfield’s observations from the training camp suggest that Gainwell’s performance has left a strong impression. “He’s more than a gadget guy,” Mayfield noted, expressing surprise at Gainwell’s talent. “I was unaware until later in training camp that he entered college as a receiver. His excellence in the run game is clear, as he stays true to his tracks and reads his blocks effectively.”
Mayfield praised Gainwell as a “huge addition” to the team. Gainwell’s leadership, described as a “veteran presence” in the locker room, has earned him high recognition from Mayfield.
Gainwell spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was instrumental in the team’s success, including their Super Bowl LIX win. Last season, he switched to the Pittsburgh Steelers, participating in 17 games but starting only two. During his time with the Steelers, Gainwell achieved 537 rushing yards and five touchdowns, serving as RB2 behind Jaylen Warren.
In addition to his running capabilities, Gainwell offers a valuable receiving option. He equaled tight end Pat Freiermuth for the second-most receiving yards on the Steelers, amassing 486 yards and scoring three touchdowns, indicating he might catch some passes from Mayfield in the upcoming season.
Gainwell joins the Buccaneers as a backup to starting back Bucky Irving. The team is aiming to enhance their performance after last year’s 8-9 record and missing the playoffs. Irving dealt with injuries last season, limiting his participation to 10 games.
Although Gainwell did not play in the team’s initial NFL preseason game, Mayfield and other healthy players are expected to participate in the upcoming preseason match against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Aug. 22. Gainwell may also get opportunities to demonstrate his skills during the game.
