The New York Liberty secured a hard-fought win against the Indiana Fever, with Breanna Stewart leading the charge. Stewart, a two-time WNBA Finals MVP, scored 22 points to help her team clinch the victory at 109-102 on Saturday night.
Leonie Fiebich also made a significant impact after her return, adding 20 points in her first game since July 3. Her contribution was crucial as New York faced a tight contest. Jonquel Jones contributed 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, helping the Liberty improve to a record of 23-15.
The game was intense until the end, tied at 100 points before Stewart’s free throw pushed the Liberty ahead. Fiebich extended the lead with a contested basket with 57.5 seconds left, despite missing the following free throw. The Liberty’s defense held strong as Caitlin Clark’s attempt to bridge the gap failed. Astier secured a five-point advantage for New York with two successful free throws.
Sabrina Ionescu and Fiebich were pivotal in bolstering New York’s lead, combining for 19 of the Liberty’s 31 points in the third quarter, setting the stage for an 85-78 advantage entering the final period.
“Both teams knew how important this game was,” Ionescu said, referring to the crucial playoff implications and tightly packed standings.
Indiana kept the pressure with Kelsey Mitchell’s 3-pointer leveling the match with under two minutes remaining. Mitchell finished with 25 points, closely followed by Aliyah Boston with 22 points and Clark contributing 21.
Fiebich’s return was a boost for New York, finally having a complete lineup after six weeks. Jones recovered from a left ankle injury, having missed most of a recent game against the Chicago Sky.
Off-court, Indiana’s visit prompted rallies outside Barclays Center concerning transgender women’s participation in sports. Comments from Fever player Sophie Cunningham sparked mixed reactions from the audience.
Jones was prominent early in the game, scoring 17 points and securing seven rebounds by halftime, maintaining a slender lead for New York at 53-49.
Indiana faces a challenging schedule, with five road games in eight days, maintaining a 2-2 record so far in this stretch.
