Kyler Murray’s debut with the Minnesota Vikings hit a snag on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. The quarterback suffered a concussion during just the third offensive play against the Green Bay Packers. Two Packers defenders delivered fierce hits, leading to Murray’s immediate entrance into concussion protocol. This raised concerns about his availability for future games.
Despite the early setback, head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an update after the Vikings secured a comeback victory over their NFC North rivals. He mentioned that Murray was feeling “pretty good” when he arrived at the facilities on Monday. O’Connell confirmed Murray is in concussion protocol but noted that he attended team meetings, indicating progression in recovery.
The Vikings are assessing Murray’s condition “a day at a time,” with the medical team ensuring he completes each step of the protocol before he can return. His participation in Week 2’s game against the Chicago Bears remains uncertain. The Bears’ performance against the Carolina Panthers, where they scored 59 points, presents a challenging matchup.
Nonetheless, there is optimism among fans as Murray might still play if he clears the necessary protocols. The initial impact led some to believe he would miss the next game, but the current outlook is more positive.
Before his injury, Murray completed 3 of 5 passes for 18 yards and threw an interception on his first snap. Following the concussion, veteran Carson Wentz stepped in to lead the team. Wentz, who remained with the Vikings as a backup from last season, delivered a solid performance. He completed 12 of 19 passes, throwing for 133 yards and three touchdowns in their 39-22 victory.
Should Murray be unavailable for the upcoming game, Wentz is expected to start, with J.J. McCarthy, a first-round pick in 2024, serving as his backup.
