Kyle Teel Returns Early from Injury to Boost White Sox Playoff Push

Kyle Teel was initially expected to miss six to 12 weeks due to a sprained left ankle incurred on July 20 in Texas. “It felt terrible right when it happened,” Teel recalled at Rate Field. Faced with the possibility of a long recovery, he expressed gratitude for his speedy return to the Chicago White Sox lineup. The team commenced a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins, and Teel’s excitement was palpable. “I’m ready to get going,” he said.

Teel’s progress from injury setbacks has been significant, having played only 19 games this season. Manager Will Venable acknowledged the challenges Teel has faced but emphasized the positive impact of his return to the team. “His energy means a lot to us,” Venable said.

Teel endured an early-season hamstring strain at the World Baseball Classic with Italy, followed by knee issues during a rehab stint with Triple-A Charlotte. It wasn’t until June 22 that he rejoined regular play. The ankle injury occurred against the Rangers in July while attempting a swipe tag. Despite a .190/.271/.317 slash line this season, Teel has contributed two doubles, two home runs, 14 RBIs, and nine runs.

The White Sox’s general manager, Chris Getz, expressed confidence in Teel’s recovery and emphasized his importance to the team’s prospects. “He’s a big part of this club, and his return is crucial,” Getz noted. During his recent rehab stint with Charlotte, Teel’s performance included a .318 batting average and one home run.

In a roster adjustment, catcher Drew Romo was optioned to Charlotte. Romo’s performance, noted for strong defensive contributions, remains valuable, and he’ll be on the taxi squad, ready for new opportunities.

With Teel and Jake Rogers available, Venable outlined plans based on opposing pitchers: “We’ll align Jake for lefties and Kyle for right-handed starters.” The team is mindful of pitcher matchups to optimize performance.

Teel’s return comes amid a pivotal moment for the White Sox, who hold a 2½-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. Teel relishes the chance to help in their playoff push, saying, “This is the best time of the year to play—this and the playoffs. One day and game at a time.”
