Kurt Angle Reflects on Pro Wrestling Career

Kurt Angle is widely known for his successful WWE career, where he earned six world titles and became the fifth Grand Slam champion in the company’s history. Angle also brought an Olympic gold medal to his professional wrestling resume, which remains an impressive feat. Wrestling fans aware of his journey know Angle’s prowess extended to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). There, he secured six world titles, two tag team championships, and an X Division championship over nearly a decade.

In a recent conversation with OutKick Dropkick, Angle mentioned he felt his career in TNA was more fulfilling. “To be honest,” he noted, “I had an incredible career in both WWE and TNA. I believe I had a better career in TNA. Unfortunately, many WWE fans didn’t get to see it. Although TNA had fans globally, in the U.S., it was often overshadowed by WWE.” He expressed a desire for WWE fans to witness his performances in TNA.

Angle’s TNA career featured notable matches against celebrated wrestlers such as Abyss, Samoa Joe, and A.J. Styles. He specifically highlighted bouts with Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles, encouraging WWE fans unfamiliar with his TNA work to watch those encounters. Reflecting on these matches, Angle said, “Any match with Samoa Joe or AJ Styles stands out. My debut against Samoa Joe at a pay-per-view was exceptional. Joe’s physical style and A.J.’s athleticism made these matches memorable.” He added that Joe’s grappling skills blended well with his wrestling style, while Styles’ agility enhanced their matches.

Among Angle’s achievements in TNA was winning two King of the Mountain matches, a unique contest where wrestlers aimed to hang a belt on a suspended hook. This format was unlike typical ladder matches, showcasing TNA’s innovative approach. Angle voiced surprise that WWE hadn’t adopted some of TNA’s creative concepts, stating, “WWE was quite inventive at one point, and it could be advantageous for them to incorporate these ideas.”

In 2013, Angle was inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame, joining other notable wrestlers like Sting, Jeff Jarrett, and Mickie James. The TNA Hall of Fame celebrates outstanding contributions to the company.
