Key Developments in Michigan’s Democratic Senate Race

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, leads Representative Haley Stevens narrowly in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. The winner will replace Senator Gary Peters against Republican Mike Rogers. This race is crucial for Senate control. Other primaries were held in Kansas, Missouri, Virginia, and Washington. In Michigan, progressive William Lawrence won a House primary, facing Republican Tom Barrett in a swing district.

El-Sayed advocates for universal health care and has the support of progressive leaders. Stevens, known for bipartisan efforts and supporting Israel, is bolstered by $60 million in outside funding, mainly from AIPAC. In Virginia, Elaine Luria will challenge Jen Kiggans in a key House race. Kansas Governor’s race sees Cindy Holscher, a populist Democrat, against State Senator Ty Masterson, a Trump-endorsed candidate.

Additional results include Marie Gluesenkamp Perez advancing in Washington’s nonpartisan primary. In Detroit, Shri Thanedar faces Donovan McKinney in another primary contest. El-Sayed’s lead remains narrow with around half of the votes counted, and updates continue to shift candidate margins.

John James, backed by President Trump, secured the Republican nomination for Michigan governor. The mail-in ballot system in Washington continues to facilitate voter participation. Various races across the states are shaping up to be competitive in upcoming general elections.
