Jonathan Swan, a New York Times reporter, shared his views on President Donald Trump’s political ambitions during an interview with “60 Minutes Australia” last week. Swan described Trump as having “Napoleonic” ambitions and an ability to survive politically, advising journalists to maintain humility when assessing Trump’s future.
Alongside fellow Times reporter Maggie Haberman, Swan discussed their book, “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump.” In the interview, Swan speculated on the remainder of Trump’s term. He warned that even with Democrats potentially controlling the House, Trump’s position may remain unchallenged due to his wealth and legal protections.
Swan stated, “I think Donald Trump’s obituary has been written so many times — his political obituary — by so many people. If you don’t have some humility around that, you’re operating in a fairly delusional way. This person has incredible survival capacities and is still the most powerful man on the planet with no intention of stepping back.”

While discussing Trump’s potential future actions, Swan noted a focus on Cuba as a possible foreign policy move. “There are many things he might pursue,” Swan said, highlighting the world’s vast possibilities.
Swan recounted a White House encounter, suggesting it revealed Trump’s mindset. During a meeting, Trump allegedly showed Swan and Haberman a document listing historical figures, including Stalin, Mao, and Napoleon, comparing himself to these leaders in terms of power.
The document emphasized power, not morality, claiming Trump as the most powerful leader historically. Swan remarked, “I think Trump desires to be a sort of Napoleonic figure, a defining global presence of our age.”
Responding to this interview, White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales stated, “President Trump fights daily to deliver a strong, safe, and prosperous nation. His sole legacy is making America greater.”
