Golf can be immensely frustrating, and even professional players feel the pressure. Jon Rahm experienced this frustration first-hand during the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
A Solid Start
Rahm, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, began the tournament well. On Thursday, he finished with a score of 2-under-par. This promising start set high expectations for the rest of his tournament run.
Challenges on the Course
Despite his initial success, Friday proved challenging for Rahm. At the ninth hole, he had already missed several key putts for birdie and par. His frustrations climaxed when he narrowly missed a birdie putt, resulting in an outburst of anger.
“F–k off!” exclaimed Rahm, voicing what many golfers feel when missing makeable putts.
The intense greens at the U.S. Open presented difficulties, similar to trying to land a putt on a mini-golf course with unpredictable elements. Rahm’s disappointment is something many golfers can relate to.
Turning Point
This miss was a sign of things to come. Although Rahm managed to make a par on the subsequent hole, he struggled with bogeys on five consecutive holes on the back nine. Compounded with three bogeys from the front nine, his score totaled 78 for the day.
Consequently, Rahm ended at 6-over for the tournament, which positioned him below the cut line. It was undoubtedly a tough day that Rahm would likely prefer to leave behind.
