The district covers areas including Hartford, Glastonbury, Bristol, and Windsor Locks.
This term, during a session concerning legislation that would grant House members access to Treasury payment information, Larson expressed frustration. He criticized his colleagues, saying, “You will do what Elon Musk and Donald Trump tell you to do. Where’s the legislature’s independence? We are an equal branch of government,” highlighting the issue through his words.
Losing his composure, he pointed out empty seats and asked rhetorically, “Where’s Elon Musk?” Larson has consistently criticized Musk and President Donald Trump throughout his tenure. Notably, he has filed more than a dozen impeachment articles following the capture and extradition of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. In that scenario, Larson accused Trump of piracy and other charges. This push for impeachment coincided with his primary challenge from the younger Bronin.
Bronin, who contributed to the Obama administration, offered a campaign focusing on generational change. He aimed to challenge an incumbent representing a long-held Democratic stronghold.
The First District has not had a Republican Representative since Edwin May Jr., who served during President Eisenhower’s administration. Gilchrest represents progressive views and maintains a pro-choice stance regarding abortion rights. Fortune, considering herself a less well-funded major candidate, centered her campaign on education.
Republican Amy Chai, a physician prioritizing addiction treatment, commented on her campaign site about the nation’s stress and division, urging for change. Despite her efforts, Democrats remain favored over Chai and the GOP in the district.
