John Denver’s ‘Country Roads’ Becomes U.S. World Cup Anthem

The U.S. team in this World Cup has embraced a unique tradition: singing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” with their fans after matches. Coach Mauricio Pochettino, despite his Argentine roots and residing in Spain, joined in following a 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Bill Danoff, who co-wrote the song, expressed his pride, noting that John Denver, who passed away in 1997, would have enjoyed witnessing the recent match.

Danoff remarked on the excitement of the game, especially since the U.S. team won despite being down a player. This connection with “Country Roads” has even kindled Danoff’s interest in soccer. The John Denver estate appreciates the revival of the song at the World Cup, highlighting its universal appeal and relatable lyrics.

Everyone knows what ‘Take me home to the place I belong’ is about. It’s not limited to West Virginia.

Although the lyrics mention West Virginia, the song was inspired by a drive through Maryland. Danoff and co-writer Taffy Nivert were inspired after a trip to Gaithersburg. Despite not spending considerable time in West Virginia, Danoff was influenced by Appalachian music and connections with West Virginia natives. Originally intending to pitch the song to Johnny Cash, they opted to let John Denver record it, resulting in its release in 1971 as a major hit.

According to The Athletic, FIFA included “Country Roads” in its postgame playlist to connect the U.S. team with supporters. The song debuted after the U.S. team’s win over Australia, resonating both in the stadium and online. Midfielder Weston McKennie noted the strong connection with fans.

Despite a brief setback with a loss to Turkey, the song was revived when the U.S. advanced against Bosnia-Herzegovina. McKennie and Sebastian Berhalter showcased their enthusiasm by singing and interacting with fans.

Beyond the World Cup, “Country Roads” has been a sports staple. It’s sung by West Virginia University fans and European sports spectators, including NFL fans in Germany and Manchester United supporters.

While “Country Roads” is a highlight for U.S. fans, the England team has adopted Oasis’ “Wonderwall” as their anthem. They sing it post-match, creating memorable moments, as recounted by captain Harry Kane.
