Jimmy Kimmel’s Summer Break: Guest Hosts and Past Suspension

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel announced a two-month break from his ABC show, starting the week of July 6. Guest hosts will include Tiffany Haddish, Anthony Anderson, Ike Barinholtz, Colman Domingo, and Jelly Roll, as outlined in an ABC press release. Comedian Rosie O’Donnell, known for her frequent critiques of Donald Trump, will also fill in as a guest host.

This announcement came during Kimmel’s show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He humorously addressed the audience, stating, “I hope you’re paying attention this summer, because I will be taking the next two months off — this time voluntarily.” He referred to his previous suspension following comments on Charlie Kirk’s death.

Kimmel’s show faced removal from the airwaves for nearly a week after his broadcast on September 15 of the previous year. During that episode, Kimmel criticized Republican reactions to the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The criticism ignited a wave of condemnation from Republican figures, leading FCC Chair Brendan Carr to threaten regulatory action. The removal of the show sparked protests about free speech outside Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, and at ABC headquarters in New York.

Kimmel returned to his show on September 23, addressing the suspension with emotion. He said, “You understand it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” referencing Kirk. He emphasized the importance of free speech in his return monologue, noting, “This show is not important. What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this.” His return episode garnered over 6 million viewers.
