Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post, shared his views on President Trump and defended recent changes at his newspaper. During an interview on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box,’ Bezos described Trump as ‘more mature, more disciplined’ in his second term. He credited Trump with having ‘lots of good ideas and being right about many things.’
Bezos responded to criticisms suggesting that he aimed to gain favor with the current administration. He highlighted that he works with presidents from any political party, emphasizing his allegiance to the country, stating, ‘I am on the side of America.’
Bezos attended Trump’s inauguration last year, and Amazon invested significant funds in promoting a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump. These actions have been viewed by some as attempts to curry favor.
Critics also noted changes at The Washington Post under Bezos’s ownership, such as ending presidential endorsements shortly before the 2024 election and repositioning the editorial stance to focus on ‘personal liberties and free markets’ without publishing opposing views on these topics. This shift led to a notable decline in subscriptions over the past 18 months.
During the interview, financial columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin queried Bezos about the documentary deal involving Mrs. Trump. Bezos clarified that he had no role in the arrangement, rejecting claims that it was an effort to buy influence.
