New York Times Under Scrutiny for Kristof’s Undisclosed Donations

The New York Times faces criticism regarding an interview with Hasan Piker, which sparked controversy after comments that appeared to justify the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione, broadcast on ‘America Reports’. Fox News media analyst Howard Kurtz and Ben Domenech, a Fox News contributor, reacted to these statements.

Kurtz expressed concern over Hasan Piker’s comments on Fox News’ America Reports, emphasizing the potential implications of his remarks on the alleged murder case.

Further scrutiny is directed at liberal columnist Nicholas Kristof’s writings, as The New York Times investigates to determine if clarifications are necessary. Kristof, who briefly left the Times in 2021 to run for Oregon governor as a Democrat, returned in 2022 after being deemed ineligible due to residency requirements. During this period, Kristof was accused of failing to disclose donations from subjects of his work to his political campaign.

Semafor reports that Kristof favorably mentioned significant donor Bill Gates multiple times without disclosing that Gates and his former wife reportedly contributed a combined $100,000 to Kristof’s campaign. Furthermore, Kristof quoted individuals in his work who had donated to his campaign, including McKinsey Global Managing Partner Bob Sternfels and late Harvard professor Joseph Nye, without revealing these connections.

The Times, known for its strict journalistic standards, announced a review of Kristof’s articles following Semafor’s inquiry into the potential conflict. A Times spokesperson commented that previous donations from people mentioned by Kristof should have been clearer to readers, and articles are being reviewed for necessary clarifications.

Kristof’s involvement extends to commenting on Jeffrey Epstein-related news, including questioning ex-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak about ties to Epstein during the New York Times DealBook summit. Despite Kristof’s critiques of past President Donald Trump’s alleged Epstein links, Kristof has yet to mention Gates’ involvement with Epstein.

Documents show Gates and Epstein corresponded and socialized between 2011 and 2014 at Epstein’s New York mansion. Gates maintains he never saw Epstein’s criminal behavior and was not inclined to a relationship despite Epstein’s attempts.

The Times and Kristof have elicited multiple controversies, including an article alleging Israeli abuse of Palestinian detainees. This piece drew severe backlash from readers and the Israeli government, prompting the threat of a lawsuit against The Times. Protesters criticized the paper, accusing it of spreading anti-Zionist sentiments. Despite criticism, The Times defended the article, citing support from independent studies, and resisted calls for retraction.
