Democrat James Talarico’s position in the Texas race for the U.S. Senate has strengthened beyond recent polling, impacting prediction markets. This marks significant movement against Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton. On prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket, Talarico now leads for the first time this week. Kalshi lists Talarico with a 56% chance of winning, compared to Paxton’s 44%. This marks Talarico’s first lead on Kalshi after weeks of competitive polling in a historically Republican state.
The shift favoring Talarico occurred early Wednesday. On Polymarket, Talarico holds a 52% probability, while Paxton trails at 48%, with the trend favoring Talarico since Tuesday afternoon. Political science professor Robert Y. Shapiro from Columbia University commented to Newsweek via email that such a shift could signify broader Democratic support in the midterms. Texas flipping towards Democrats could seriously impact Republican politics, potentially aiding Democrats’ ambitions to gain Senate control and block judicial appointments from former President Donald Trump.
Despite Democratic advances, Texas remains a Republican bastion. Trump secured Texas by significant margins in the 2024 presidential election, and Democrats haven’t captured a Senate seat in decades. In the current Senate, Republicans hold a 53-45 majority, excluding independents Bernie Sanders and Angus King, who caucus with Democrats. Both parties view the Texas seat as crucial for their ambitions in the Senate. Newsweek reached out for comments from both Paxton and Talarico’s campaigns on Wednesday.
Current Polling Insights
A Texas Public Opinion Research poll from the previous month showed Talarico ahead with 45% to Paxton’s 40%. A later Fox News poll indicated Talarico leading 51% to 48%, within the margin of error. Among highly motivated and interested voters, Talarico leads 53% to 47%. The Fox poll included 1,006 Texas registered voters between July 23-27, with a margin of error of 3%.
The Texas Pulse survey for the Texas A&M Bush School on Talarico versus Paxton revealed Talarico’s lead, 47% to 43%, among likely Texas voters, a shift from their tie in the June survey. This poll surveyed 619 likely voters between July 27-30, with a margin of error of +/- 4.7%, suggesting a tight race rather than a definitive lead for Talarico.
The prediction-market shifts are mirrored elsewhere. Decision Desk HQ now calls the race a toss-up, with Talarico slightly ahead in their latest forecast. Similarly, the Cook Political Report categorizes the race as Lean Republican.
Implications for Ken Paxton
Paxton’s largest hurdle appears to be gathering moderate and independent voter support after a challenging primary against Senator John Cornyn. The Texas Pulse survey reflects Talarico’s gains with independents, improving by 23 points from June’s 14 points. Moreover, Paxton faces increased scrutiny over political issues, while Talarico’s campaign has raised more funds, enhancing Democratic prospects for a sustained statewide initiative.
However, Texas isn’t guaranteed to shift blue overnight. Republicans retain the state’s partisan edge, while prediction-market valuations can change swiftly with new data. The significance of recent shifts reveals Talarico’s position as more than a poll leader—he now leads prediction markets as well. The Texas Senate race shapes up to be among the year’s most impactful and fiercely contested.
