The NFL season is nearing kickoff, and Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals is recognized as one of the league’s top wide receivers.

Last season, Chase ranked third in the NFL with 125 receptions and secured fourth place with 1,412 receiving yards. He shared the 11th spot with eight receiving touchdowns. Recently, Chase expressed his ambition to increase this number significantly.

“Honestly, man, the only goal that I have for myself going forward is to get 23 touchdowns. I want to break the record with that,” Chase told NFL Network.

Chase emphasized improvement, saying his daily goal is to surpass his previous performance and enhance his team’s capabilities.

The record of 23 receiving touchdowns in a single season is held by Randy Moss, an all-time great who achieved it in 2007 with the New England Patriots, playing alongside Tom Brady. To set a new record, Chase needs at least 24 touchdowns in the upcoming season, a target that seems reachable given his 2024 performance where he scored 17 touchdowns, marking a personal best.

His quarterback, Joe Burrow, returns after missing part of the last season due to injury and playing only eight games. In those limited appearances, Burrow managed 17 touchdown passes. Chase, who had a few two-touchdown games, will require several such performances this season to surpass Moss’s record. It’s worth noting that Chase will benefit from playing one more regular-season game than Moss did in 2007, assuming he’s healthy and available all season.

Following the preseason activities and training camp, Chase will begin his pursuit of the record when the Bengals face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, September 13.
