The Detroit Lions began training camp without a key player, Jahmyr Gibbs, on Wednesday. The running back’s absence has sparked contract extension discussions, as the 24-year-old is now eligible for an extension.

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed the situation, stating, ‘You guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys.’ He emphasized that both parties are working through negotiations, indicating that the process might take some time.

Gibbs reported to camp, yet he isn’t on the Lions’ Physically Unable to Perform or Non-Football Injury list. This suggests his absence might be related to contract negotiations. The Lions chose Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he immediately fortified the team’s offense.

In his rookie season, Gibbs rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns and recorded 52 catches for 316 yards with an additional touchdown over 15 games. He elevated his performance in 2024, achieving 1,412 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns, alongside 52 receptions for 517 yards and four touchdowns.

During the recent season, Gibbs played every game, demonstrating resilience and consistency. He managed 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns while catching 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns across 17 games. Notably, Gibbs has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of his three NFL seasons.

Atlanta Falcons’ running back Bijan Robinson also missed the opening day of training camp, with reports attributing his absence to contract issues.
