Knicks Fans Flock to San Antonio for Game 5

Knicks players traveling to San Antonio for Game 5 of the N.B.A. finals on Saturday will not be alone. Thousands of fans from the New York area are also heading to the game. New Yorkers in the arena may outnumber Texans, according to several ticket resale companies.

Matt Ferrel, vice president of TickPick, expressed surprise at the trend. “It is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before,” he said. With only 24 hours to go before tipoff, TickPick reported that 48 percent of the tickets sold for Game 5 were purchased by people from New York and New Jersey. This data was gathered from ZIP codes linked to credit cards used for purchases, according to company spokesman Jonathan Gluskin. Ticketing platforms StubHub, SeatGeek, and Vivid Seats reported that New York-area fans accounted for 36 to 40 percent of Game 5 ticket sales on their sites.

Even if New Yorkers do not make up a majority of attendees, there are signs that Spurs fans might be outnumbered at Frost Bank Center. Less than 20 percent of Game 5 tickets on TickPick, StubHub, and SeatGeek were bought with Texas-based credit cards. However, fans from California and Florida make up 15 percent of TickPick’s ticket sales, Gluskin noted.

“It looks like San Antonio might effectively become New York City’s sixth borough on Saturday,” joked Jack Sterne, a spokesman for StubHub.

According to Margaux Elias of SeatGeek, this scenario is unusual. Typically, fans traveling to fill an away arena are nearby. For example, Chicago Bulls fans might drive 90 miles north to Milwaukee; Cleveland Cavaliers fans find it easy to make a five-hour round trip to boo the Detroit Pistons.

The distance from Madison Square Garden to Frost Bank Center is approximately 1,800 miles or a 27-hour drive. Flying is a faster option, but before Game 5, only a few flights from LaGuardia could get fans there in time. A Delta flight leaving at 6 a.m. with a layover in Atlanta could cost around $703, according to Flights.com.

For Knicks fans, attending the game in San Antonio might be economical. This month, the cheapest seats for a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden were around $8,000 each. In San Antonio, Friday’s average Game 5 ticket price was $2,372, as noted by Julia Young of Vivid Seats. Given the potential high costs for a Game 6 back at the Garden, Ferrel mentioned that fans see a relative bargain in attending the game in San Antonio.
