A remarkable superyacht, speculated to belong to ‘Harry Potter’ author J.K. Rowling, has made headlines as it arrived at Marina del Rey in Los Angeles. Locals quickly identified the vessel despite efforts to conceal its name.
“The worst-kept secret on the Marina,” a source noted, referring to the yacht’s identity.
The yacht’s name was hidden shortly after docking, an attempt reportedly aimed at avoiding protests against Rowling’s views. The Samsara, valued at approximately $150 million, was initially spotted by the Instagram account twogirls.oneboat with followers recognizing it as Rowling’s yacht.
Rowling’s ownership has been confirmed, although she has not been seen publicly. The yacht is an imposing white presence in the marina.
Superyacht broker Chris Cecil-Wright shared insights into practices of yacht owners. Hiding a yacht’s name is unusual, although turning off the AIS can deter identification. High-profile individuals often seek privacy, and yachts offer a significant degree of seclusion.
The Samsara is equipped to host 12 guests and employs a crew of 26. It boasts luxury features including a circular swimming pool, cinema, and beach club.
Built by Oceanco in 2015, under the name Infinity, the yacht was previously owned by Eric Smidt and later by Brett Blundy. Rowling acquired it in 2023, renaming it Samsara.
Rowling’s financial journey is noteworthy; from receiving assistance as a single mother, she rose to immense wealth following the success of ‘Harry Potter’. Her net worth is now estimated at $1.2 billion by Forbes.
Superyachts are coveted for combining luxury with privacy, serving as floating mansions for the affluent.
