Israeli Officials React to Far-Right Gains in Germany

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved significant electoral success on Sunday in Saxony-Anhalt. This is noteworthy as they are the first far-right party to secure such a victory in Germany since World War II. Some Jewish organizations have pointed out the historical significance of this event, referencing the Holocaust.

In Israel, the response to this development has been mixed. Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, has not pursued relations with far-right parties in Germany or Austria, despite engaging with right-wing groups elsewhere in Europe.

There is concern among some Israeli officials about the AfD’s electoral gains. The relationship between the Israeli government and European right-wing parties is complex and has resulted in various reactions. While some officials openly express worry, others remain silent, indicating differing perspectives on how to deal with these parties.

The political dynamics involved are part of broader international relations, reflecting the diverse strategies countries adopt when interacting with political entities that may challenge democratic values or have controversial histories.
