Police in Cape Town, South Africa, have launched an investigation into the death of Jayden Adams, a South African soccer player who recently participated in the World Cup. The 25-year-old’s body was found over the weekend at a location within the city.

Adams passed away two weeks after contributing to South Africa’s historic advancement to the World Cup knockout stage. The cause of death has not been disclosed by the authorities.

“Cape Town central police registered an inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male on Saturday,” police stated. “Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”

The body was found in the Schotsche Kloof area of Cape Town at approximately 11 a.m. last Saturday. Police have not provided further details.

Juanito Adams, Jayden’s father, communicated to the South African television station eNCA that the family is awaiting autopsy results and has not arranged funeral plans. He expressed the family’s struggle, mentioning the unexpected nature of the death. “As you all know, it was an untimely death. The family is struggling to process it,” he said. “It won’t be easy to carry on. You just learn to live with it.”

During the World Cup, Adams participated in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches. However, he did not play in the team’s round of 32 loss to Canada on June 28.

South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie noted that Adams had played against the Czech Republic shortly after learning of his grandmother’s death. McKenzie urged the public and media to “exercise restraint and compassion” and avoid speculation as the investigation proceeds.

In remembrance of Adams, moments of silence and tributes were observed at the recent England vs. Norway and Argentina vs. Switzerland quarterfinal matches.
