The Indiana Fever secured an 86-77 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday night. However, the tensions between the two teams were a major focal point of the game.
Caitlin Clark delivered another impressive performance, scoring 24 points and providing nine assists to lead Indiana to the win. As the fourth quarter reached the seven-minute mark, a physical altercation erupted between Clark and Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner.
The confrontation brought immediate intensity, with Clark standing her ground. Words were exchanged and the officials charged Clark with her fifth technical foul of the season. Their on-court animosity dates back to a physical postseason clash in 2024, which included pushing from both sides.
DeWanna Bonner had a brief and turbulent period as Clark’s teammate in Indiana before leaving the team, which added to the tension of the encounter. Sophomore guard Sophie Cunningham was quick to support her star teammate, confronting Bonner during the incident. Cameras caught Cunningham laughing as the situation escalated, and the officials handed technical fouls to both Cunningham and Bonner.
Alyssa Thomas, Bonner’s girlfriend and a key player for the Mercury, intervened to defend Bonner. Meanwhile, Indiana forward Myisha Hines-Allen joined the fray. The referees issued double technical fouls to Thomas and Hines-Allen.
Moments later, Hines-Allen pushed Bonner, leading to her ejection due to a prior technical foul. The game was interrupted by numerous whistles and reviews, dragging the fourth quarter out to 44 minutes.
After the game, Clark addressed the chaotic ending, expressing her appreciation for the referees’ calls. She joked about the possibility of the quarter being the longest in WNBA history. Despite the challenges, Clark remained committed to the team’s goal: “Just stay focused on the goals. That’s to win the game,” she emphasized.
