Illinois Leaders Oppose Trump’s National Guard Proposal for Chicago

Violent crime in Chicago continues to rise, with President Trump repeatedly suggesting the deployment of the National Guard to the city. However, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have called out Trump’s proposal, arguing that he does not understand the specific safety needs of the area. They also criticize Trump’s past actions of defunding essential safety institutions in Chicago.

Recent reports highlight a tragic incident on the University of Chicago campus. Two people, a 27-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were fatally shot inside a vehicle near the Midway Plaisance Ice Skating Rink and Harper Quad. The incident took place at around 5:35 p.m., and both victims succumbed to gunshot wounds to the head.

The victims were transported to the university hospital in critical condition but were later pronounced dead. As of now, authorities have not established any connection between the victims and the university. A firearm was recovered from the scene, and investigations are underway.

Chicago Police Department representatives stated that details about the incident are still pending, and further information is awaited. Video footage suggests the vehicle may have crashed during or after the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to uncover additional information.
