The Department of Homeland Security plans to introduce new gloves capable of delivering electric shocks as part of the enforcement tools used by ICE agents. These gloves will join the existing arsenal, which includes firearms, stun guns, and pepper spray. Homeland Security labels the gloves an important nonlethal option.
The company that manufactures these devices advises against their use on certain sensitive groups. These groups include small children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with severe disabilities. Recently, a person was seen wearing these gloves at the Oklahoma County Detention Center in Oklahoma City in 2024.
Despite the department’s assurance of their nonlethal nature, advocates express concern over the potential misuse of these gloves. They highlight past instances where ICE officers have improperly used their enforcement tools, sometimes with deadly outcomes.
This development sparks a debate on the balance between law enforcement capabilities and the prevention of abusive practices. Monitoring and regulation will play key roles in ensuring these tools are used appropriately and humanely.
