Ian Tosi’s Remarkable Comeback Leads Mount Carmel to Victory

Last spring, Ian Tosi from Mount Carmel faced unexpected news after surgery. What was thought to be a simple procedure turned into Tommy John surgery, leading to an intense rehabilitation period. Tosi, now a senior and committed to Miami, demonstrated his determination and recovery in a game that justified his effort.

“I worked every single day of the week to recover,” Tosi stated. “Returning in 11 months is unheard of, and I’m proud of my dedication to my team.”

On Wednesday, Tosi showcased an inspiring performance, overcoming four errors and six hits. He restricted St. Laurence to four earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. This effort contributed to Mount Carmel’s upset over the top-seeded St. Laurence with a score of 12-8 in the Class 4A Brother Rice Sectional semifinal in Chicago.

Both Brady Holland, a Georgetown recruit, and TJ McQuillan, a Wake Forest commit, hit home runs for the fourth-seeded Caravan (28-10), with Holland hitting a three-run shot. Pancho Vazquez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Cullen Winters finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

“It’s amazing, but we knew we were going to win,” Tosi affirmed. “It’s not even close to an upset; we believe we’re the better team.”

The victory sets up Mount Carmel against Brother Rice (28-10) in the sectional championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday, following Brother Rice’s 7-6 victory over Reavis in the other semifinal.

On the other side, Louisville recruit Cory Les led St. Laurence (35-3) with a three-run homer and four RBIs, while Danny Donovan added a solo home run. Despite their efforts, Tosi managed to keep the Vikings in check, delivering the performance expected by Mount Carmel coach Brian Hurry.

“He’s faced a lot over the last 16 to 17 months,” Coach Hurry remarked. “Not many have seen what he endured to return to the mound. His determination against such a tough lineup was commendable.”

Tosi’s ordeal began with a struggle to address arm pain, resulting in the discovery of a partial UCL tear in his left elbow. He explained, “They initially said I needed a repair. Upon waking from surgery, I found out about the full Tommy John reconstruction and felt frustrated. However, over time, I realized it was for the best. The repair would have been temporary. Now, I’m prepared and my arm only keeps improving.”

Unexpectedly ready by the start of the season, Tosi began with short outings. As the season progressed, he increased his playing time. Presently, he holds a 5-0 record with a 1.46 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings.

“The recovery plan has been ideal,” Tosi noted. “I consistently assured them that I’d be prepared for the playoffs, capable of contributing five to seven innings to win.”

Holland provided substantial run support with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, bringing the score to 12-5. “We knew the importance of scoring consistently,” Holland said. “After not ever beating them in these years, this win is special.”

The game was particularly meaningful for Tosi. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,” he expressed. “I’ve dedicated so much to this moment. Emotions were high after the game ended. I’m just grateful to have contributed to our team’s victory.”
