Humanoid Robots for Border Patrol: A Possibility

Humanoid robots capable of navigating rough terrains and detecting individuals may soon assist federal agents at the southern border. A U.S. robotics company has showcased this technology to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Development and Applications

Sankaet Pathak, founder and CEO of Foundation, has discussed these robots’ potential with Fox News Digital. The company is in talks with several national security agencies to explore uses for their humanoid robotics. Pathak mentioned ongoing discussions with the Air Force, Navy, Army, and DHS regarding possible contracts and applications.

Foundation’s Phantom humanoid robot is designed to patrol challenging terrain and signal potential border crossings to federal agents. However, a DHS spokesperson confirmed no official agreements or contracts with Foundation exist currently.

Capabilities of Phantom Robots

Pathak envisions these robots conducting reconnaissance and surveillance where human agents, vehicles, and aerial drones face difficulties. He believes humanoids will effectively fill gaps where current automated solutions fall short.

Phantom robots can differentiate humans from other obstacles, move autonomously over rough terrain, and map environments. Their autonomous reconnaissance facilitates identifying potential border crossings for human oversight.

Future Developments

Foundation plans to unveil a more rugged version of its Phantom robot soon, featuring waterproof and dustproof capabilities. Underground operations, such as monitoring tunnels along the border, represent another use case for this technology. Pathak emphasized the safety implications, allowing human officers to remain in secure locations while robots conduct 24/7 surveillance.

While weather resistance remains a current limitation, a second-generation model aims to enhance outdoor deployment capabilities. Additionally, if requested by the federal government, Foundation would consider arming robots for border operations. However, enforcement decisions will remain human-controlled.

Operational Insights

Robots are programmed to detect activities and report them for human intervention. Pathak suggests that pilot projects could commence soon, with expanded operations following within a few months.
