Senior linebacker Colton Zvonar recognizes that this season marks a significant chapter for Lincoln-Way and his family. It might be the final season for his father, Rob, the sole head coach in the football program’s history. This year will also be Rob’s last coaching his sons with the Griffins. Colton is the youngest of three Zvonar brothers who have played for their father.
“It’s been three years but basically my whole life in preparation,” Colton shared. “I’ve always known I’d be the last one, and it’s possible he might finish with me. It’s surreal this year has arrived. We aim to win a state championship but are also set on cherishing each day of this final season together.”
Rob Zvonar has thought about retiring after his sons graduate, though he hasn’t finalized his decision. “I haven’t overthought it,” Rob stated. “I’ll decide post-season. Right now, our focus is on the current team and doing what’s needed.”
Colton, a three-year starter, is anticipated to be a crucial leader for the Griffins, ranked No. 3 in the Daily Southtown preseason. “He’s experienced and needs to play like a super senior, guiding the defense,” Rob said. “He’s a coach’s kid and understands the game, allowing me to encourage him to improve.”
Playing for his dad has been enjoyable for Colton, even when Rob is tough on him. “Having been around it for so long, he trusts my football IQ. When he makes a call, I can relay it,” Colton noted. “The flipside is getting yelled at, but at home, everything’s normal.”
Senior defensive back Charlie Palmer, heading to Central Michigan, echoed Colton’s deep game understanding. “Entering sophomore year, he knew our defense,” Palmer stated. “His dad has implemented this defense forever, so Colton is an expert. He’s the best leader, ensuring every linebacker understands their role.”
Colton feels more resilient entering his senior year. “Initially, I was a bit soft,” he admitted. “But I’ve improved physically and grown stronger.”
With Colton and Palmer, the team consists largely of veterans amid a relatively inexperienced roster. “We lack star power but might be the underdog, which isn’t necessarily negative,” Colton stated. “We aim to be scrappy, fighting all four quarters to win. Team chemistry and unity are our key strengths.”
Should this be his dad’s last season, the team feels even more driven. “It’s a great motivator,” Colton expressed. “Given his successful career, why not have another great year? We’ll give it everything.”
