FBI Director Kash Patel announced a remarkable operation in Chicago involving multiple federal agencies. Over a 60-day period, more than 300 suspects were arrested, including high-profile targets from Iraq and Colombia.
Patel emphasized the operation, dubbed ‘Operation New Dawn,’ as an aggressive effort under President Trump’s leadership to target violent crimes and crimes against children. Among those apprehended were individuals connected to gun trafficking, immigration violations, and child exploitation.
‘Operation New Dawn represents a massive, whole-of-government approach to cracking down on violent crimes and crimes against children in American cities,’ Patel stated.
The operation, conducted by 11 federal agencies, resulted in 305 arrests and the recovery of 24 children, some reported kidnapped or missing. Agencies involved included the FBI, DEA, ATF, and HSI.
Unified Efforts
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois noted the operation as ‘badgeless,’ meaning collaboration was unified under the U.S. flag, not by individual agency logos.
U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros emphasized the operation’s success as evidence of a new law enforcement era. He highlighted the importance of federal agencies working swiftly and unitedly against violence.
‘To combat violence, federal law enforcement must move at the speed of violence,’ Boutros said. ‘Operation New Dawn proves that Chicago’s federal apparatus can be a formidable presence.’
ATF Special Agent Christopher Amon highlighted the collaboration’s impact on safety. The operation led to the arrest of individuals like Felipe Dejesus Gomez Ramirez and members of Chicago’s Traveling Vice Lords gang, David Collins and Tyrone Thomas, involved in drug trafficking.
Drug Trafficking and Violent Crime
DEA Special Agent Todd C. Smith underscored the operation’s role in tackling violent crime and drug trafficking. He noted that Homeland Security Task Force and U.S. Attorney’s Office combined intelligence and resources to disrupt dangerous networks.
‘Reducing violent crime is one of DEA’s top strategic priorities,’ Smith said. ‘This operation highlights the link between violence and drug trafficking.’
The operation, which commenced on May 1, led to 179 defendants charged in federal court across 140 new cases. A significant amount of drugs was seized, emphasizing efforts toward a Fentanyl Free America.
Twenty-four children were safely returned home thanks to the operation. Law enforcement’s coordinated efforts demonstrate a robust approach to combating crime and enhancing public safety.
