HHS Decertifies Kentucky Organ Donor Network Over Near-Harvesting Incident

The Department of Health and Human Services has revoked the certification of Kentucky’s organ donation network. This action followed a near-critical incident where a living patient’s organs were almost harvested. Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst for Fox News, addressed these safety failures. He highlighted the call by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for ethical reforms to better protect patients and regain public trust in the system.

Medication Error in Nashville

At Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown in Nashville, a serious incident occurred involving patients receiving the wrong medication during joint replacement surgeries. Four individuals were reportedly given potassium phosphate instead of the intended anesthetic, bupivacaine. One of these patients, as described by her family, is now paralyzed. This incident was confirmed to Fox News Digital by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which has initiated an inquiry following information received from the Tennessee Healthcare Facilities Commission.

Knee surgery successful, but complications arose from medication error.

The family of a woman affected by the error reported her knee surgery went well, but she lost feeling from her breastbone down due to the wrong drug being administered. Kristina Dorton, the patient’s daughter-in-law, commented on the uncertainty of recovery, expressing doubt about any possible improvements.

The remaining three patients are experiencing serious health complications due to the mix-up. CBS News reported that another patient has also claimed paralysis. In response, the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Shubhada Jagasia, issued a formal apology and outlined steps taken to address the error. Dr. Jagasia reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to patient safety, noting the immediate steps taken to improve safety protocols and identify causes to prevent future incidents.

Apologies and Corrective Measures

Dr. Jagasia stated, “Providing safe, high-quality care is at the core of everything we do, and any gap in meeting that standard receives our immediate, uncompromising attention.” The hospital initiated a thorough investigation and implemented corrective measures. Enhanced safety protocols have been enforced to maintain high safety standards. Despite efforts, Dorton mentioned that her mother-in-law’s treatment has not yielded improvement. She appealed to the hope that someone with expertise could offer aid.

This incident highlights the critical need for stringent procedural adherence and oversight in healthcare settings to safeguard patient well-being.
