Several visitors at the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C. required hospitalization due to life-threatening conditions caused by extreme heat. This led organizers to temporarily shut down the event as temperatures soared, reaching triple digits.
The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded these high temperatures amidst a powerful heat dome affecting much of the eastern U.S. near the Fourth of July holiday. Many forecasters warned about the potential for hundreds of daily records to be broken.
Freedom 250 announced that due to the oppressive heat, the fair would be closed until 5 p.m. to ensure the safety of attendees.
Over 40 People Required Medical Attention
Before the closure, DC Fire and EMS confirmed to NBC News that they had assisted 44 individuals, with 11 being hospitalized. Of those, seven needed advanced life support while four required basic support. Over a dozen cases were specifically linked to heat-related illnesses.
The Department of Health and Human Services and George Washington University Hospital provided additional support on-site. In response, Freedom 250 planned to open the fair and the FIFA Fan Zone later on Saturday at 12 p.m., rather than the usual 10 a.m.
The organization advised guests to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, apply sunscreen, and seek shade. Cooling stations, tents, and air-conditioned buses were made available to combat the heat. All 15 pavilion structures from 4th to 14th Street were air-conditioned for guest relief.
Unique Methods for Relief
Some fairgoers found unconventional solutions to beat the heat. A visitor mentioned seeking relief in a baptism pool within a religious tent, as she felt overwhelmed by the temperatures. This unusual measure highlights the severity of conditions experienced at the fair.
“None of these booths have air conditioning,” she shared. “I started seeing stars and ended up getting into the pool they were using for baptisms. I’m soaking wet, but it helped me cool down.”

The NWS forecasts for Washington, D.C. include scattered showers and thunderstorms on July 4th. A high near 102 degrees is expected with a peak index value reaching up to 113 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are likely on Saturday night, especially before 1 a.m., with expected lows around 75 degrees and a 60% chance of rain.
