Harry Styles delivered a unique orchestral performance at Southbank’s Meltdown festival on June 16. The 32-year-old artist took a break from his successful “Together, Together” residency at Wembley Stadium to collaborate with composer Jules Buckley and the House Gospel Choir. They performed songs from his solo projects to a packed audience at the Royal Festival Hall in the Southbank Center, U.K.
Styles offered orchestral renditions of tracks from his latest album, “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,” along with selections from his previous works. The highlight of the evening was a surprise performance of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
In a conversation with the audience, Styles expressed his affection for classical and orchestral music. He stated, “It’s quite an intimidating field to step into as someone who cannot read music.” He appreciated Jules Buckley, saying, “I’ve never felt so welcomed into the space; Jules never made me feel like I didn’t belong there, and collaborating with him has been beautiful.”
The performance was part of Southbank’s Meltdown festival, which commenced on June 11. The week-long festival featured a mix of free and paid events across indie, jazz, electronic, and pop music. Styles himself curated the lineup.
In a statement to “Billboard,” Styles shared, “Music is my life; every artist involved in this year’s Meltdown festival means so much to me, both as a fan and a musician.” He added, “It’s a true honor to host legends who have paved the way for the generations that follow them, as well as new acts that have inspired me to push my creative boundaries.”
Harry Styles’ Meltdown festival continues at the Southbank Center until June 21. The “Together, Together” Tour is set to run through the end of the year, including 30 shows at Madison Square Garden in New York this fall. His 12-night Wembley Stadium residency concludes on July 4.
