Handcuffed Suspect Takes Dallas Police Car; Officer Inside

A traffic stop in Dallas escalated dramatically when a suspect, handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser, reportedly took control of the vehicle, driving off with an officer still inside. This chaotic event unfolded on May 30 around 5:35 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue, according to police reports.

Newly released body and dash camera footage provides a vivid record, capturing the moments when the suspect escaped his restraints and the events that followed. Stacey Huffman, 37, was initially arrested and secured in the back of a police car but managed to slip his left hand free from the handcuffs, hiding his hands behind his back.

As the officers began the drive to the jail, Huffman allegedly attempted to open his door and unfastened his seatbelt. The officers stopped on Interstate 35 at about 6:10 p.m. to address the situation further.

While the officers were outside the vehicle, Huffman allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat and fled. One officer managed to re-enter the back seat before the cruiser moved. Despite using a Taser, its effect was nullified when Huffman removed the wires. The officer was heard repeatedly urging Huffman to “Stop the car!” as the vehicle sped onward.

According to authorities, one officer stayed in the car during the suspect’s alleged takeover. He eventually resorted to using his firearm, striking Huffman on the head as a defensive measure while the vehicle veered down the road.

The unpredictable journey reached its peak when Huffman opened the driver’s side door and leapt out while the cruiser was moving at approximately 50 mph. The car continued for about 1,000 feet with Huffman in control for roughly 30 seconds. Fortunately, the officer quickly managed to regain control of the vehicle after Huffman exited, preventing a crash.

Huffman became unconscious following his escape attempt and was promptly taken back into custody. Both Huffman and the officer required hospital care for their injuries.

Authorities report that Huffman may face multiple charges including driving without a valid license, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and escape from custody. The investigation remains ongoing.
