Gnomes Make a Comeback at Chelsea Flower Show

The prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, held in London, witnessed a change this year as the Royal Horticultural Society lifted the longstanding ban on garden gnomes. This decision sparked discussions on the role of whimsy in the traditional English garden.

King Charles III and David Beckham, who introduced a new white shrub rose named in his honor, were among the attendees. The event saw a temporary lift of the gnome ban, marking a deviation from the usual practice where the Royal Horticultural Society dismisses gnomes as too campy.

This year, the society encouraged celebrities to decorate gnomes as a fundraising effort to engage children in gardening. The move provoked varied reactions concerning the presence of kitsch in English gardens.

Robert Brett, curator for the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden at Wisley, clearly stated, ‘Do we have gnomes at Wisley? Am I interested in gnomes? No.’

In contrast, British comedian Tom Allen, who dressed a gnome in a suit and tie for a charity auction, expressed the hope that the ban might be permanently removed. He remarked, ‘Something that’s quirky and different and a bit passé, like a gnome, is actually what the world needs.’
