A global coalition of soccer fan groups launched a petition on Thursday urging Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president. This demand follows his controversial attempt to sell future World Cup profits to private investors.
The petition, emphasizing its message with the phrase InfantinOut, also advocates for comprehensive reforms at FIFA. It states, “The shameful effort by one individual – the FIFA President himself – to sell the World Cup to private investors marks a betrayal that football will remember.” It refers to Infantino’s abandoned plan for a commercial spinoff after widespread opposition.
Among the fan groups supporting the petition are Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, and North America’s Independent Supporters Council, alongside approximately 40 national fan organizations worldwide.
Despite calls for his resignation, Infantino remains in office. UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, has openly stated its lack of confidence in him. Moreover, leaders from North America’s CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have also voiced criticisms.
The petition asserts, “Gianni Infantino has shown a profound failure of leadership that goes against democratic governance.” It criticizes the concentration of power in the FIFA Presidency, opaque decision-making, clientelism, and lack of accountability as factors eroding trust in FIFA.
It concludes by insisting, “For the credibility of FIFA and the future of the game, he must resign.” The petition also highlights Infantino’s prior support for contentious projects that displeased fans, such as the unsuccessful European Super League initiative and the proposal to hold World Cups every two years.
