Giannis Antetokounmpo Traded to Miami Heat

The Milwaukee Bucks have traded Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. This move ends the Bucks’ historic run that brought the city its first NBA title in 50 years.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Miami Heat will receive Antetokounmpo and Portis in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis. The deal also includes three future first-round picks, the No. 13 pick in Tuesday’s draft, a future pick swap, and a second-round pick.

Antetokounmpo was recently seen on the court at Fiserv Forum during a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder in January 2026.

Both the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat were the frontrunners in the Giannis trade discussions as the NBA Draft approached. The trade follows years of uncertainty in Milwaukee after championship-winning head coach Mike Budenholzer left the team in 2023. The Bucks experienced a decline, missing the 2026 playoffs.

Antetokounmpo, now 31, was instrumental in securing the franchise’s first championship in half a century back in 2021. Recognized among the NBA’s top 75 players, he is a two-time MVP and was named MVP of the Finals. However, following several underwhelming seasons and an injury-ridden 2025-26, Milwaukee decided to focus on building for the future.

Despite Giannis’ wishes to play, he was sidelined at the end of the season. This strategic decision allowed Milwaukee to leverage Antetokounmpo’s value in the trading market.

The Miami Heat emerged as the successful contender from many teams vying for Giannis. This move reflects Heat president Pat Riley’s commitment to enhancing the team’s roster and pursuit of another championship win.
