Germany’s Late Surge Ensures Victory Against Ivory Coast

Germany’s World Cup performance remains impressive. The four-time champions appeared unsteady against Ivory Coast, trailing due to Franck Kessie’s goal. However, striker Deniz Undav emerged as a match-changer, scoring twice in the second half, including a stoppage-time winner, securing Germany a spot in the last 32.

Germany’s Chances of Winning

This comeback marks only the second of the tournament, similar to South Korea’s victory over the Czech Republic. Although Germany didn’t initially appear as winners, the experience may benefit them in future knockout stages. Their attack was lackluster during the first half under Nagelsmann’s midfield-focused system, struggling against Ivory Coast’s defensive setup. Key players like Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala had limited chances, with only Nathaniel Brown providing a glimpse of opportunity. A notable moment was a Kai Havertz header, saved by Yahia Fofana.

Improvement came after a triple substitution at 60 minutes. The introduction of Deniz Undav alongside Havertz brought new targeting options. Shortly after, Undav scored, assisted by Nadiem Amiri’s cross. Despite Ivory Coast’s later attempts, Germany’s precision prevailed with Felix Nmecha’s pass leading to Undav’s decisive goal.

This result ensures Germany moves beyond group-stage exits seen in previous tournaments.

Deniz Undav’s Impact

Deniz Undav’s goals were pivotal for coach Nagelsmann. The equalizer and winning goal showcased his strength and justified Nagelsmann’s substitutions. Last season, only Harry Kane outscored Undav in the Bundesliga. Undav’s career trajectory is remarkable, starting from the German fourth tier to becoming Germany’s reliable option in critical moments.

His performance highlights Germany’s need for his scoring abilities while underscoring areas needing improvement.

Strength of African Teams

Despite their loss, Ivory Coast’s play was commendable, reflecting the strong performances of African teams in the tournament. Representing 10 teams, the continent doubled its presence from 2022, thanks to expanded qualification. Ivory Coast excelled in many aspects, deploying a 4-1-4-1 defense and 4-3-3 attack, with pacey counter-attacks exposing German vulnerabilities.

Morocco, having reached the World Cup semi-finals previously, has already troubled Brazil and overcame Scotland. Senegal’s initial performance against France showed promise despite their eventual defeat. Other African teams like Cape Verde, Egypt, DR Congo, and Ghana have also shown resilience, securing key points and victories.

Concerns for Germany’s Defense

Ivory Coast’s play revealed Germany’s defensive weaknesses. Before and after Kessie’s goal, Germany’s vulnerability was evident whenever their defense was isolated. This issue persists, affected by the balance in the team’s strategy.

The goal conceded highlighted a major flaw; Kimmich’s inability to prevent the cross allowed too much space for Ivory Coast’s attack. Germany’s reliance on attacking players over defensive stability means reconsidering their midfield strategy. Sacrificing an attacker for another midfielder to provide security may address these issues, though it could further diminish their current attacking struggles.

Elye Wahi’s Situation

Ivory Coast’s Elye Wahi faced challenges due to match-fixing allegations, impacting his participation. Initially prevented from entering Canada, Wahi was ultimately approved to travel to Toronto following successful petitions. Pending investigation, his status remains uncertain, and he was benched in favor of a formation change.

Wahi had started a previous victory but stayed on the bench against Germany, with Evann Guessand replacing Ange-Yoan Bonny instead.

Upcoming Matches

The next matches for these teams are scheduled for Thursday, June 25. Ivory Coast will play Curacao in Philadelphia at 4pm ET (9pm BST), while Germany faces Ecuador in New Jersey at the same time.
