Freedom Fuel Network: Trump’s Endorsement and the Figures Behind It

President Donald Trump and his administration have actively supported the Freedom Fuel Network, a chain of patriotic convenience stores that recently emerged in the Philadelphia area. These stations offer gasoline at a promotional price of $3.47 per gallon, commemorating Trump as the 47th president of the United States. However, discovering the individuals behind this venture has been challenging, as the network is led by a diverse group of businessmen, including an NFL kicking coach, a GOP fundraiser, and a New Jersey entrepreneur involved in a legal dispute over unlawfully acquiring fuel.

The connection between Trump’s endorsement and the gas stations is unclear, as the businessmen refused or were unavailable for comment. Nevertheless, Trump praised the affordable fuel prices on his Truth Social account on July 1, aligning with the peak travel season over the Fourth of July holiday. He stated, “I am pleased to announce that a VERY smart Retailer, located throughout the Northeast, is stepping up,” emphasizing America’s supposed newfound strength and the anticipated return to lower gas prices post-conflict with Iran.

The White House’s social media also promoted the Freedom Fuel Network, highlighting its launch and sharing footage of customers showing gratitude to Trump for the reduced cost. The featured station, located in Dresher, Pennsylvania, is operated by a subsidiary of Blue Owl Capital, an investment firm that previously engaged Trump as a stakeholder.

Despite Trump’s past financial ties to Blue Owl, officials have denied his personal involvement, revealing discussions with unidentified individuals linked to the formation of the gas stations. The administration asserted, “The Administration is not involved in the company, nor has the Administration given the company any funding. There is no other entity or person subsidizing the lower gasoline costs.” Blue Owl, which owns about a third of the Freedom Fuel properties, maintains that its lease agreements with independent contractors keep the firm uninvolved in tenant operations.

Fourteen of Freedom Fuel’s 25 stations are managed by firms affiliated with Shamikh and Syed Kazmi, brothers facing numerous legal and civil misconduct allegations. Shamikh Kazmi leases eight of those from Blue Owl, persistently marketing themselves as reputable suppliers despite extensive litigation against them.

In February, a federal judge ordered the Kazmi brothers to compensate a fuel supplier over $600,000 for allegations of theft. Claims include their unauthorized access to the supplier’s fuel depot, resulting in the removal of over 230,000 gallons of gasoline. Syed Kazmi faced a separate judgment two years ago, convicted of unethical conduct at a 7-Eleven franchise.

Furthermore, Shamikh Kazmi’s company was held in contempt in 2022 for unauthorized use of BP America’s trademark at its stations. Despite directives for removal, BP’s branding remained, prompting U.S. Marshals to intervene.

Attempts to contact the Kazmis yielded no responses, and inquiries directed to Freedom Fuel’s website were left unanswered, with necessary contact information reportedly unavailable.

Freedom Fuel Network’s incorporation traces to Delaware on June 23, signed by Randy Brown and Yoni Gontownik. Brown’s reputed political alignment attracted attention; he is a business coach for the Baltimore Ravens and previously served as Evesham Township’s mayor. Meanwhile, Gontownik, a former investment figure, has affiliations with political organizations.

Jeff Lenard, representing the National Association of Convenience Stores, commented on the promotional pricing by Freedom Fuel. Such strategies, he noted, often involve selling fuel at a loss, and are utilized by retailers to generate traffic. His association witnessed similar pricing that seldom lasts beyond days.

Consumers have noted that Freedom Fuel’s prices have steadily increased this week, evidenced by stations like Bensalem, Pennsylvania, charging $3.82 per gallon—a marginal difference from competitors nearby.

In response to speculation, the Freedom Fuel Network issued a statement thanking Trump for their “explosive growth.” They refuted claims of misinformation, asserting their mission to provide communities with lower fuel costs.
