FIFA Suspends Red Card Ban, Allowing Folarin Balogun to Play

In a surprising move, FIFA has suspended the red card ban of Folarin Balogun, allowing the United States’ top goal scorer to play against Belgium. This decision marks the first time since 1962 that FIFA has altered a suspension ruling, which raised questions about its motivation.

President Trump reportedly asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the suspension following Balogun’s red card in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although President Trump acknowledged the decision on Truth Social, he did not mention contacting Mr. Infantino or taking credit.

FIFA announced that Balogun could play, citing article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code. The match suspension was suspended for a one-year probation. Should Balogun commit a similar offense during this period, the suspension will take effect, alongside any new penalties.

This unusual allowance benefits the U.S., as Balogun is a key player in their endeavor to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 24 years. The decision comes amid ongoing scrutiny of FIFA for allegedly favoring high-profile players and teams. Previously, Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to play in the World Cup, despite receiving a red card before the event.

FIFA and the Belgian federation have not commented on the recent decision. White House correspondent Tyler Pager and global sports correspondent Tariq Panja report on these developments.
