Ferrari has introduced the Luce, marking its first venture into the electric vehicle market. This milestone comes as luxury brands face challenging targets and costs with electrification.
The Luce: A New Direction for Ferrari
The Luce, a five-seater sports car, is a bold move for the Italian automaker. With substantial battery weight, Ferrari engineers have designed a model that maintains performance on sharp turns. Despite the innovative design, the Luce lacks the iconic engine sound and design that traditionally define Ferrari vehicles.
“This has been a major investment from Ferrari’s point of view in a product that, at the moment, there’s no real certainty as to what the market is for it,” said Angus MacKenzie, international bureau chief for MotorTrend. “They’re nervous, would be fair to say.”
Collaborative Design Effort
Ferrari collaborated with LoveFrom, the agency led by Jony Ive, Apple’s former design chief, and industrial designer Marc Newson, to create the Luce. Their work focused on a glass and polished aluminum frame that reaches nearly 200 mph.
