The Party for Socialism and Liberation, critical of the indictment, was among the earliest to respond, calling the charges a pretext for conflict. Authorities are scrutinizing numerous U.S. organizations allegedly coordinating with Cuban officials. These groups reportedly mounted campaigns in favor of the Cuban government, involving messaging, lobbying, and other supportive actions.

The investigation identified 145 U.S.-based organizations. These include nonprofits, labor groups, and other entities with a collective annual revenue of around $1 billion. Key players include CodePink and the People’s Forum.

“Cuba is not a menace to the world. The United States is a menace to the world,” said Vijay Prashad, executive director at Tricontinental, in defense of Castro.

Under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, those engaging in U.S. political activities at a foreign government’s direction may need to register with the Justice Department. Advocacy remains protected, but coordinated activities without registration warrant investigation.

Complex Network Funding

Many involved organizations receive funding from Neville Roy Singham, a tech tycoon supportive of the Chinese Communist Party. The Department of Justice and the Treasury Department are closely examining these ties, evaluating potential legal and fiscal violations.

Alleged Foreign Influence

The network under scrutiny spans various communities, including labor groups, socialist parties, media networks, and more. Investigators are evaluating actions such as educational exchanges, organized delegations, and other interactions potentially aligning with Cuban interests.

While diplomatic work includes fostering relations, the investigation focuses on whether any actions surpassed being mere advocacy and entered unlawful coordination with foreign influence.
