Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky released a collection of diary entries by Fauci from the COVID-19 pandemic period. The 1,141-page document, which was briefly available online, aims to underscore disagreements between Fauci and certain politicians regarding the origins of the coronavirus. Fauci has clashed with Paul for years about how the pandemic started. Even after leaving his role at NIAID in 2022, Paul continues to investigate COVID-19’s origins and government-funded life sciences research.
Paul published a thread on X claiming disparities between Fauci’s private writings and his public assurances. No comments were received from Fauci or Paul when approached by NPR.
Felicia Goodrum, a Dartmouth College virologist, suggests Fauci might have expressed uncertainty in private before the virus was well understood compared to his public reassurances during the panic.

Paul advocates the lab leak theory, suggesting it should be reconsidered. He refers to previous Senate discussions and a Republican subcommittee report in 2024, which favored the lab leak explanation. They argued NIH funds might have aided research on virus enhancement at Wuhan Institute of Virology, known as gain of function.
Robert Garry, a Tulane University virologist, contests this hypothesis, citing a lack of evidence. He claims no institution, including Wuhan’s, possessed a virus similar enough to SARS-CoV-2 to create the pandemic-causing pathogen.
Paul suspects Fauci and his colleagues concealed evidence supporting a lab leak theory. NPR reached out to Fauci concerning Paul’s comments but received no reply.
