Father’s Experience with FIFA World Cup Ticket Reassignment

A father wishing to remain unnamed faced disappointment after purchasing ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ tickets for the FIFA World Cup. Initially excited about securing Front Category 1 tickets for himself and his family, he later discovered their seats had been changed unexpectedly.

He bought four tickets for Match 74, a Round of 32 game at Gillette Stadium in Boston on June 29. The purchase was made during FIFA’s Last-Minute Sales Phase. In this phase, tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing customers to select seats and buy them directly.

The plan was to take my family, especially my 11-year-old son, a huge soccer fan.

His son, an avid player on two teams and a fan of the English Premier League and La Liga, views the World Cup as more than a mere sporting event. He spends his free time playing FC 26 on Nintendo Switch, dreaming of experiencing the World Cup firsthand. Being an aspiring goalkeeper, experiencing the match close to the field was essential.

The father selected seats near the corner flag, specifically Row 1, Seats 1-4, hoping for an uninterrupted view and a possible interaction with players. Each ticket cost $1,860, totaling $7,440, purchased on April 21. FIFA confirmed these specific seats in their correspondence.

He started planning the trip to Boston, but on June 1 discovered changes to the seating arrangement. The seats were reassigned to a different section, three sections closer to midfield, and moved from Row 1 to Row 3. Despite the potential upgrade, he was dissatisfied.

I deliberately chose front-row seats for that unique experience.

No prior communication from FIFA added to his frustration. The father felt uninformed and disregarded, only discovering the shift when checking his tickets online weeks later.

He emailed and called FIFA’s ticketing office, requesting to return to the original seats or find equivalent alternatives. Attempts to speak to representatives were unsuccessful.

I’m unsure what the purpose of selecting and confirming specific seats is if they are reassigned without notice.

Newsweek contacted FIFA for comments. Although FIFA did not provide statements for publication, Newsweek learned that the initial reassignment was due to restricted-visibility issues identified after the sale. It remains unclear why these were not highlighted during the purchasing process or why the father wasn’t informed.

An internal review at FIFA is reportedly underway to enhance communications in similar future cases. Following Newsweek’s engagement, the seats were reassigned again, this time aligning with the father’s original choice. Delighted with the resolution, the father is now eagerly anticipating taking his family to the World Cup.
