The killing of a Mexican man in the United States by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop in Houston marks an intense moment amidst continued deportation efforts under President Trump.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, the victim, had lived in the U.S. for 35 years. A father and husband, he was on his way to a construction job when the incident occurred.

Recently, deportation campaigns that had slowed earlier resumed with renewed vigor. Ronaldo Salgado, one of Mr. Araujo’s sons, expressed a desire to remember his father as a hard-working family man rather than a victim of violence. “He wanted to provide for his family and see his sons succeed,” Ronaldo said.

Confusion Over Target of the Operation

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear. Initial reports from federal authorities stated that ICE agents attempted to arrest Mr. Araujo, whom they labeled as an “illegal alien,” during a vehicle stop. It concluded with Mr. Araujo allegedly hitting an ICE vehicle and not complying, leading to an officer firing in self-defense. He was shot in the abdomen and later died at the hospital.

A statement from ICE later clarified that Mr. Araujo was not the target of their operation, as they were looking for someone else. However, this clarification came after initial claims that he had tried to run over an officer.

Eyewitness Accounts Differ

The incident was observed by three men traveling with Mr. Araujo, including his younger brother. They were detained in Conroe, Texas, at the time of reporting. Witnesses contested the official version of events, creating further controversy.

“He didn’t deserve this. He was simply on his way to work,” said a witness who knew Mr. Araujo.
