Baseball players face various risks of injury during games. However, being hit by a ball from a fan in the stands is an uncommon event. This rare occurrence took place when Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jesús Sánchez left a game after suffering an injury from such an incident.
The injury happened during a 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. In the sixth inning, with Toronto trailing 6-0, Sánchez was struck in the wrist by a ball coming from the stands. Initial reactions, including those from the Peacock broadcast, expressed confusion and concern.
“What’re you thinking?” Jim Palmer commented. “I’d fingerprint it right now.”
Sánchez seemed to engage with fans before the incident. Several witnesses reported that a young fan, approximately 13 years old, mistakenly thought Sánchez wanted to play catch and threw the ball after Sánchez had turned. It was a misunderstanding rather than a malicious act.
This incident isn’t the first of its kind. In 2012, former Tampa Bay Rays infielder Elliot Johnson famously played catch with fans, highlighting the joy sports can spread, albeit with proper timing.
The Orioles identified and removed the fan involved, ensuring a thorough investigation. Despite the accident, the Blue Jays reported that X-rays for Sánchez, showing no major harm, confirmed a bruised right wrist.
Sánchez exited after hitting 1-for-2 and was replaced by Yohendrick Piñango. The situation serves as a reminder for fans to ensure that players are indeed inviting interaction. Dan Zaksheske provided this report for OutKick.
