An F-35 aircraft from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed on Friday morning at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego. This incident sparked an emergency response and ignited a brush fire, according to a base spokesperson.

Emergency teams responded to what was described by the Marine Corps as an ‘aircraft mishap’ on the flight line around 10 a.m. local time. The F-35 was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, as stated by 1st Lt. Blake Starbuck. The aircraft was stationed at MCAS Miramar.

The U.S. Marines classified the event as a ‘Class A mishap’ involving a Marine Corps F-35B near MCAS Miramar. The pilot safely ejected from the aircraft and was recovered.

1st Lt. Starbuck mentioned that at the time, there was no information available regarding the mission’s purpose, whether the aircraft was departing or arriving, or if it was on a training mission. It is also unclear whether there were any injuries or fatalities resulting from the crash. The cause of the crash has not been determined as of yet.

The crash resulted in a fire in a field just north of state Route 52. This fire was visible from the freeway. Footage from SkyRanger 7 showed the plane broken into two pieces amid a large area of scorched earth. The fire caught the attention of drivers on State Route 52 and led to calls to the California Highway Patrol.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported they were assisting with the brush fire, but they noted the military held jurisdiction over the situation.

Authorities have not scheduled a press conference. Officials stated that more details would be released as they become available.
