Extreme Spring Weather Across the U.S.

Severe Weather Events

Spring weather is causing disruptions from coast to coast. On Monday, intense storms are affecting the Midwest, Rockies are experiencing snowfall, and the East is facing unusual heat. More than 230 severe weather reports, including 25 tornado incidents, were recorded just on Sunday. Tornadoes impacted Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Minnesota, with significant damage in Nebraska and St. Paul.

In Saint Libory, Nebraska, the storms badly affected homes. The severe weather reached South Dakota and Iowa. Omaha experienced thunderstorm activity, which is now moving toward Kansas City. Current forecasts warn nearly 49 million people about the severe storm risk from north Texas to northern Michigan.

Flood Watches and Storm Risks

Flood watches are active for 5 million people in regions like eastern Kansas, southeastern Nebraska, and large parts of Missouri. Heavy rainfall and flood potential are increasing in southcentral Missouri, where storms might intensify later in the evening. Some areas could see rain rates from 1-2 inches, with some spots going up to 5-7 inches per hour.

A moderate risk warning is issued for areas in Kansas and southeastern Nebraska, with elevated chances for strong tornadoes. Wind gusts over 75 mph and hail larger than 3 inches in diameter are possibilities. Key cities like Kansas City, Omaha, Lincoln, Des Moines, and Oklahoma City are under tornado watches.

Upcoming Weather Changes

As Tuesday approaches, the cold front will move east, reducing storm risks. Still, 48 million people remain under slight risk for severe conditions involving hail, high wind, and tornadoes from southwest Texas to northern New England. On Tuesday, Texas faces strong hail threats, while risks for isolated tornadoes will span the eastern Great Lakes, interior Northeast, and northern New England areas.

Varied Weather in Colorado

Colorado is seeing diverse weather conditions. Wildfires are active in parts, while freezing temperatures and hail are impacting areas near Denver. Winter alerts are issued for much of Wyoming and sections of northeastern Utah and the Colorado Rockies.

Record Heat in the Northeast

The Northeast is experiencing unprecedented heat. Temperatures are climbing to the high 80s and 90s, soaring 10-25 degrees above the norm through Wednesday, with potential record highs in the Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. Several cities, including Washington, Syracuse, Hartford, Pittsburgh, and others, could set new records.

The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the low to mid-90s in Baltimore and Washington until thunderstorms arrive Wednesday. The Northeast may see two days of 90-degree temperatures this week, which is ahead of schedule.

Fire Danger

Critical fire warnings affect 11 million people across the southern Plains and California’s Central Valley. The high fire risk affects areas like the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles and southwest Kansas, with extremely critical conditions expected.

Sustained winds of 20-30 mph, coupled with 5%-15% humidity levels, are creating conditions conducive to rapidly spreading wildfires. A shift in wind direction is anticipated on Monday evening, which may alter the movement of active fires.
