A devastating explosion involving pyrotechnic material occurred in Temascalcingo, a town in Mexico State, during a festival honoring a patron saint. The incident led to the collapse of a wall, killing at least 10 people and injuring 64 others, according to local authorities.

The explosion took place on Saturday night next to the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church, situated in the central Mexican municipality with a population of 66,000. Residents had gathered for a fireworks display, an essential feature of the religious festival, when the unexpected blast disrupted the event. Temascalcingo is located approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Mexico City.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as people prayed in the wake of the disaster. Photos show the community of Santa Maria Canchesda, within Temascalcingo, on September 6, 2026, where the blast left several dead and many more injured. Images captured by Luis Cortes from Reuters reveal the emotional turmoil that followed.

The cause behind the explosion remains unknown, prompting the Mexico State Attorney General’s Office to initiate an investigation. Among the injured, a local bishop reported, are two priests involved in the festival activities.

A video circulating on social media portrays the aftermath, showcasing smoke-filled air and people moving through debris, attempting to aid survivors. Such incidents involving pyrotechnics are not uncommon in Mexico. Fireworks regularly feature in street and religious festivities, but they also pose significant risks.

Nearly four years ago, another fireworks explosion in the village of Huejutla, located in the central state of Hidalgo, resulted in 17 injuries, underscoring the recurring dangers associated with pyrotechnic celebrations.
