Feeling bored or stuck in life? You might be ready for a side quest—an activity that deviates from your usual routine to add some fun and adventure to your daily life.
In video games, side quests enhance the main storyline. In real life, they offer a chance to explore new avenues without specific objectives, providing enjoyment and variety. Ethnomusicologist Kyra Gaunt explains that side quests reveal hidden facets of ourselves and enrich our main pursuits.
“Just like in the gaming world, it makes the main quest stronger,” shares Gaunt, author of The Games Black Girls Play: Learning the Ropes From Double-Dutch to Hip-Hop.
Research supports the idea that play improves problem-solving and collaboration skills. Gaunt notes that new activities engage different neural networks, fostering a sense of wonder.
Kickstart Your Side Quest
Consider activities you loved as a child. Public speaker Jeff Harry suggests reflecting on childhood joys, like Lego-building or finger painting, to inspire your current playtime. Perhaps an acting class or adventurous hike awaits you.
Quiz Your Play Style
If childhood favorites don’t spark interest, take a quiz to discover your play personality. This can reveal if you’re a “dreamer” enjoying fantasy worlds or an “organizer” thriving on order.
Try Something New
Engage in an activity outside your comfort zone. Gaunt recommends embracing unfamiliar challenges. Her experience in a drawing class enhanced other aspects of her life, like writing.
Follow Your Urges
If choices feel overwhelming, simply trust your instincts. Sahara Moné, of Let’s Play NYC, advises paying attention to longstanding desires, like an acting class you’ve postponed.
Use ARTSN to Achieve Goals
Use Kyra Gaunt’s ARTSN method to ensure your side quest is:
- Achievable: Small enough to start.
- Revealing: Teaches you something new.
- Time-bound: Has a clear start and end.
- Specific: Has a clear goal.
- Notice: Reflect on how it affects you.
Adult life often involves controlling outcomes. Side quests offer an opportunity to let go and enjoy the process.
